Fez ~ The oldest Tanneries in the world

ALIF & ALC students are invited for a cultural tour of the old city of Fez el Bali, known as Al-Medina .

Meet outside Hotel Batha in the Medina on Saturday, ِMay. 30
at 10:00 a.m.

This professionally guided walk will serve to give you a little history and get you oriented for your own further jaunts. (No shopping!)
*Some of the cultural sites like the old medrasas have a 10dh fee for entrance. This goes to maintenance of the site.

Trip to the Sahara

ALIF is sponsoring a trip to the beautiful dunes of Southern Morocco!
We will depart from ALIF at 12:30 pm on Friday and arrive in Erfoud around 8 pm to spend the night in Hotel Xaluca with a buffet dinner, music and swimming.
After a relaxing morning swim and breakfast, we will head for the dunes, arriving at Merzouga’s Tombuktou Hotel one hour later where a buffet lunch will be served.
In late afternoon, we will ride camels on an overnight trek to the oasis to watch the sunset on Saturday night. We’ll leave Merzouga early Sunday morning after breakfast and should be back in Fez by 7:30 p.m
The cost for this excursion, including all transportation, meals and hotel expenses is 1400 dh including camels.
We will have a very short MANDATORY orientation meeting on Thursday, march 19, at 12:15 in room 1 to discuss the itineraries and what to bring.

Saturday, April 25th there will be an excursion to the nearby ancient city of Volubilis and Meknes.

All interested students must sign up and pay Linda by
Friday 24th at noon

Meet in the ALIF Garden Saturday at 9:00 am sharp!

We will proceed to Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire’s western and southern-most outposts, for a guided tour of the ruins.

We will stop in Meknes to see its Medina and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the granaries, and the Christian Prison. You might also like to visit the Palais Jamai rug and cultural museum across from Bab Mansour and the Medrasa Bouanania in the Meknes Medina.

We will go by van and should return by the early evening.
Costs for the trip will be 250 Dh including entry tickets to all the sights. You will have to buy your own lunch.

Two-dimensional Islamic art is decorative and based on plane geometry. This presentation will start with images from the three forms – geometric forms, floral arabesque, calligraphy – and then focus on how the geometric forms can be organized into three underlying categories based respectively on octagons, hexagons, and pentagons.

and use Arabic ONLY.

We will take a walking tour of the medina landmarks.
The tour should finish by 1 PM
Students will pay for their entry tickets to the sites.

Naima Lahbil, Moroccan Professor of Economics and current consultant with ADER-FES on the HAMMAMEED project will talk about the importance of the Hammam in Moroccan everyday culture and experience. Professor Lahbil has long been a champion of the cultural and historic heritage of Fes Medina and worked with UNESCO and the World Bank on many projects.

The project is working on restoring and maintaining the architectural and historic integrity of some of the important hammams in the medina. This lecture will give students some insight into the Moroccan hammam experience as well as an opportunity to learn more about the direction and goals of the historic restoration projects in Fes

Would you like to learn more about the most highly regarded art form in the Islamic world?  ALIF is sponsoring a series of Calligraphy classes in the ALIF riad on Wednesday, September 17/24 and October 1/8/15, taught by Abdellah Kahhak, a talented instructor.

Please sign up on the ALIF bulletin board in the garden and show up for the classes at the ALIF Riad at 6:30 pm if you would like to join a workshop.

 The cost is 35-50 dhs depending on the number of participants.
